Harker Heights Parks and Rec Hiring Aquatics Staff to Keep Carl Levin Park Pool Open this Summer
The City of Harker Heights Parks and Recreation Department are hiring part-time aquatic staff to keep Carl Levin Park Outdoor Pool open this summer for regular programming. The main need are American Red Cross certified lifeguards, though other opportunities are available, as well.
The Carl Levin Park Outdoor Pool is a seasonal pool operated by the Harker Heights Parks and Recreation Department. The pool typically opens on Memorial Day Weekend and closes mid-August. Last year, due to a nation-wide shortage of part-time aquatics staff, the Carl Levin Park Outdoor Pool reduced hours, limited aquatics programs, and had a delayed opening.
“We were disappointed that we were not fully staffed last year,” said Jeff Achee, Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Harker Heights. “We are working hard this year to try and be fully staffed and offer as much programming as we can, but at this point we will not be able to open with the staff we have.”
To encourage applicants, Harker Heights Parks and Recreation will offer reimbursement for American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification to offset the up-front costs that applicants must pay. To be eligible for reimbursement, the applicant must have received certification after January 1, 2023 and must agree to work through at least August 13, 2023. Because the pool facility does not have a “deep end,” certification courses cannot be conducted at the pool and must be sought out elsewhere.
“Staff is excited to meet those in our community who want to help provide a community service in a fun and safe atmosphere,” said Kiarrah Carlisle, Athletics & Aquatics Coordinator for the City of Harker Heights.
