During the upcoming eclipse impact period, the City of Harker Heights' population of approximately 35,000+ people is expected to surge. To ensure a smooth experience, it's advisable to plan ahead, be well-prepared, and set reasonable expectations given the situation. Enjoy the awe-inspiring eclipse while being mindful of safety, preparedness, and environmental responsibility.

  1. Traffic and Local Services: Expect heavy traffic and longer lines at local establishments like restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, and retail stores during the anticipated impact days. Plan ahead by completing errands and appointments before Thursday, April 4, 2024, and be aware that some services and businesses may have limited hours on Monday, April 8, 2024. Consider scheduling important errands early to avoid crowds and give businesses time to restock.

  2. Supplies: Due to high demand, supplies may be limited during the impact days. If there are essential items you need, consider purchasing them early to ensure availability.

  3. Fuel and Cash: Fill up your gas tank before Thursday, April 4, 2024, if you typically do so on weekends. If you use cash regularly or want to have some on hand, visit your local bank or ATM before the impact days.

  4. Emergency Services: Understand when it's appropriate to call 911 for true emergencies. Save the non-emergency phone number for your local Police and Fire Departments in your phone ahead of time, which is (254) 953-5400, for the City of Harker Heights Police Department and (254) 699-2688, for the Harker Heights Fire Department.

  5. Cellular ServiceWith an increased number of visitors, cellular service may become overwhelmed during the impact days, especially on Monday, April 8, 2024. Develop a communication plan with family and friends in case you lose or have limited service. If you rely solely on a mobile phone, know which neighbors have land-line numbers in case you need to call 911 for an emergency.

  6. Water Conservation: Consider postponing lawn watering or excessive water usage during the anticipated impact days to reduce pressure on the public water system.

  7. Emergency Preparedness: View the eclipse event as an opportunity to review and update your emergency kits and family emergency plans. If you don't have a kit or haven't discussed emergency plans, now is an ideal time to do so and ensure you are well-prepared.
